The Somaly Mam Foundation

The Somaly Mam Foundation is inspired by its current President and spokesperson, Somaly Mam. Somaly, a former victim, is one of the most prolific activists fighting sexual slavery today. Her organization AFESIP has helped rescue and rehabilitate thousands of women and children in Southeast Asia. The Somaly Mam Foundation was launched in the United States in the Fall of 2007.

The Somaly Mam Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The foundation is dedicated to combating the global sex slave trade through the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration of the victims and through raising global awareness on the issue. The foundation funds effective organizations in various parts of the world that are combating sexual slavery in the field. Activist organizations funded by the Somaly Mam Foundation include those that are rescuing girls from brothels, offering them shelter and safety, giving them basic education, and helping them reintegrate into new communities. Due to a lack of awareness and reluctance of world governments to address the issue, there is a lack of funding and support. The Somaly Mam Foundation funds these organizations, allowing them to grow, have a larger impact, and eventually become self-sustainable.

Global awareness, and especially U.S. awareness on this issue is extremely low. Starting in the U.S., the Somaly Mam Foundation plans to increase awareness through a multilevel educational campaign including the use of celebrity voices, events, university clubs, online interaction, information, and other individual efforts.

Development Education Program for Daughter and Communities (DEPDC)
DEPDC is a non-profit community based NGO working in Thailand on the prevention side of the trafficking of women and children into the sex industry or other exploitative child labour situations. It offers free education, vocational training and full time accomodation for young girls and boys in an effort to achieve these goals.

As well as providing free permanent shelter and education DEPDC also runs several other projects and activities aimed at the prevention of trafficking and the provision of child rights in the region; emergency shelter for abused or abandoned children, care and repatriation for girls who have left commercial sex work, education for vulnerable children and teens outside of the formal education system, youth leadership education programme to combat trafficking in the Mekong Sub-Region and vocational and human rights training for undocumented migrants and indigenous peoples.

Since its inception DEPDC has helped prevent thousands of children from the Mekong sub-region succumb to the sex industry or other exploitative child labour situations. These young children have received further schooling or vocational training as a good start to a healthy life.

Grey Man works closely with DEPDC and its founder Sompop Jantraka

World Vision
World Vision was founded in the USA by Bob Pierce during the 1950s.  It all began after a life changing trip to China and Korea in 1947.  Bob’s concern for children was strengthened by his experiences in Korea during the Korean war (1950-54). Orphanages were set up in South Korea to look after children who were abandoned or orphaned.

When he returned to the US, Bob started to raise money to help other families and orphans in Asia. The response was so great that he could not administer it alone, so in September 1950, World Vision was established with Bob Pierce as its president.

In the 1960s World Vision expanded its operations to meet the needs of refugees in Indochina and of people recovering from disasters in Bangladesh and in several African countries. Where long-term assistance was needed, children began to be sponsored by Americans, Australians and others. World Vision Australia began in 1966.

In the 1970s World Vision's focus broadened from assisting the individual child to include community development. Since the 1980s, the “welfare” approach has gradually changed to a more collaborative relationship. Poor, marginalised people and communities work with World Vision to improve their lives and take control of their futures

World Vision is a well-respected organisation. Grey Man maintains liaison with their anti-trafficking officers and occasionally gives feedback on particular projects.
